First of all Ayla is the main character of the Earths Children series. When she was young an event happened which left Ayla alone. When she encountered a cave lion she hid in a small cave. big enough for her to curl up but not big enough for the lion to get at her. The Cave lion did claw at her leg before leaving, which left her with four scars.. When Ayla did leave the cave she walked and eventually passed out on a river bank..

Thats when a big change happened in her life. The clan (Flatheads) had lost their home in the same event Ayla had lost hers. The medicine woman Iza, saw her.

She was raised by them and taken into the Clan of the Cave bear as one of their own. Ayla was given a totem. She had been chosen by. The spirit of the Cave Lion, she had the marks to prove it.. But that didnt fit well with the males of the clan. As the Cave Lion was a males totem to strong for a Woman.

She did not have the thoughts of Clan people. So when Iza trained her Ayla had to remember everything, she was tested and mostly got it right. She was a healer, and nothing could change that.
